The state of Ohio levies a state tax on all game winnings in addition to the federal tax at income tax rates of 24%, and a local city tax in the cities of Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Toledo. State taxes amount to 4% of the total above the threshold which ranges from $600 to $5000. The casino you are in will withhold this 4% if you are liable and pay it to the state on your behalf. Ohio has a strange and interesting history where gambling is concerned, while casino gambling is very newly legal in the state, other forms of gambling have been around for a very long time. Those who were pro-gaming struggled to have casinos legalised for a long time. Here’s the timeline for you.
Whilst much of the specific law in Ohio around gambling remains shrouded in grey areas and confusion, legal casino gambling in the above-mentioned 10 casinos is perfectly fine, and quite enjoyable!
JACK Cleveland Ohio’s first ever casino, was opened on the 9th of April 2012.
1933 In the year 1933 Ohio’s general assembly legalised horse race betting, which still thrives at 6 different racinos to this day.
1980 – 2009 In the year 1980 the state legalised the first lottery by popular vote, of which there are a few variations even now. In the same year the assembly vetoed the push for the legalisation of casinos. In the following years there were another two pushes for casino gambling, and one for legalised riverboat gambling, all of which were denied.
2009 – Present Eventually, in 2009, four cities were given the green light to host licensed casinos. These four cities are now the most thriving places in the state.
In September of 2019, two bills from both sides of the isle were put forward to legalize sports betting on professional and college sporting events. Most believe the bill will pass positively in the next few months. This will usher in a whole new stream of gaming revenue for the state.
Casino resorts differ from other kinds of casinos in that they offer accommodation and other amenities not normally found at casinos. Ohio does not currently have any resort type casinos but one massive one is on the books for completion in 2021 in Lebanon, OH.
