Gaming Sector Generates Over $500 Million

In 2024, the Michigan gaming industry hit it big, generating $400.9 million from online gaming, with retail casinos and sportsbooks contributing $100.5 million and fantasy sports bringing in close to $300,000. The industry raised $501.4 million for the Michigan School Aid Fund, which helps K-12 public schools. This shows how much the industry is growing each year and how it supports key services in the state.

Michigan’s Online Gaming Supports Education and Public Safety

Out of a total of $501.4 million that was raised by the industry, online gaming accounted for 77% of the total. This is how Michigan maintains its ranking as one of the best states for iGaming in the US.

Executive Director of the Michigan Gaming Control Board, Henry Williams has stressed how committed the agency is to supporting and helping the public. They keep an eye on all regulations and ensure that money made from gaming goes to good causes. These causes include education, public safety and programs to encourage responsible gambling. Williams said,

The MGCB aims to protect people who gamble while creating a gaming scene that is stable and secure.

In addition to helping education, Michigan’s gaming money supported many other significant projects. The First Responder Presumed Coverage Fund received $4 million to aid public safety workers. The Compulsive Gambling Prevention Fund got $3 million to help improve responsible gambling efforts. The Agriculture Equine Industry Development Fund got $3.7 million to boost Michigan’s farming and horse related industries. Lastly, the responsible gambling campaign known as “Don’t Regret the Bet” received $3.7 million to keep up its programs.

Commercial Casino’s Play a Vital Role in Community Support

Commercial casinos in Detroit also played a big part, giving $254.8 million in city wagering taxes for 2024. These casinos have helped support city services for a long time, having given a total of $3.91 billion since 1999.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board acted on illegal gambling throughout the year. In 2024, the board took out 206 illegal gambling machines and gave out 6 stop orders. A big milestone was reached when the MGCB made offshore operator Bovada leave the Michigan market. This saw the MGCB to be the first US regulator to achieve this.

New heights were also reached in Michigan’s online gaming market. November 2024 saw many records being broken. Online casinos made $226 million in gross receipts and paid $42.5 million in taxes. This was the third month in a row to achieve record breaking revenue.

As the Michigan gaming industry continues to grow, there are still ongoing talks about possible tax hikes. Plans to increase taxes on internet gambling and sports betting have seen much resistance from operators and industry supporters.
