MGM Resorts
It has been reported that MGM Resorts properties nationwide have been experiencing cybersecurity issues recently. Guests noticed that computers were down last week, and the issue continued over the course of the week. Following rumors about the issue, officials from MGM Resorts decided to release a statement to provide information about what was going on.
Officials confirmed that the problem was down to an ongoing cybersecurity issue, with systems ranging from computers to ATMs, slots, and credit card machines being affected. Many guests and visitors to the properties were naturally alarmed to hear about the issues, and it was reported that law enforcement agencies had to get involved due to the extent and seriousness of the issues.
In a statement, MGM officials said:
MGM Resorts recently identified a cybersecurity issue affecting some of the Company’s systems. Promptly after detecting the issue, we quickly began an investigation with assistance from leading external cybersecurity experts. We also notified law enforcement and took prompt action to protect our systems and data, including shutting down certain systems.
They confirmed that the investigation was ongoing and that teams were working hard to determine the scope and seriousness of the problem.
Many Resorts Affected
Since the problem is a nationwide one, many MGM properties have been affected. According to reports, this includes some of the top properties on the Las Vegas Strip, such as Luxor, Excalibur, Aria, The Cosmopolitan, MGM Grand, New York New York, and Mandalay Bay.
As a result of the issue, the MGM website has been requesting that all questions and inquiries, even for reservations, be made by phone. The group has also provided concierge numbers for its properties for those who are looking to find out more information.
How is the Situation Handled
While there are still many details that have yet to be revealed about the problem, it was confirmed that both the FBI and the Nevada Gaming Control Board have been working with the operator to try and tackle the issue.
MGM officials did release a second statement confirming that dining, entertainment, and gaming were operational, and guests could still safely access their rooms if staying at the properties. They also said that front desk employees would be on hand to assist visitors and guests at the properties.
Things are said to have improved as the week went on, but it has taken more time for some things to become operational again compared to others. It was reported that while some aspects of the casino became operational again over the course of the week, there were still some slots that were down for a few days following the initial problem. Entertainment, however, would be continuing as scheduled, according to statements.
During the week, a couple of days after the problems were first noticed, digital keys on the app, and the Rewards app were still down. Websites for MGM Resorts were also down for some time. The operator is expected to release further updates as work on the cybersecurity issues and investigation continues.
