Are There Cruise Ship or Riverboat Casinos in Maine?

Cruise ship/riverboat casinos are casinos that exist on a barge, ship, or riverboat on specific, government assigned bodies of water. Expected New Casinos

A year ago, talks began to discuss the opening of a third casino in Maine. The specific location was not on the table but the proposal of a joint Indian tribe collaboration of the four main tribes to collectively open a casino that would boost the local and state economy and provide much needed revenue to the native community. History

Maine has a comparatively quiet gaming history with very little major developments over the years. Much of what is legal in many other states is still illegal in Maine. Here are the main events of Maine’s gambling history.

history-maine-img3.jpg
  • 1950 In 1950 the first ever racetrack was opened, Scarborough Downs, which then offered para-mutual and off-track betting.

  • 1974 Maine finally joined many of its neighbours in establishing a state lottery in this year. The state lottery is still running successfully today despite its late start.

  • 1988 The state passed a law that allows for Indian casinos on tribal land in this year. A number of high-stakes bingo halls sprung to life soon after, but no longer exist today.

  • 2010 A very long and quiet period followed the 1988 act until finally, in 2010, the state legalised the construction of two on-land casinos in Oxford and Bangor. These are, to this day, the only legal casinos in Maine.

Upcoming Changes in the Gambling Regulation

The state is currently engaged in preliminary discussions about the potential legalization of sports betting. The current stance seems to be that lawmakers want to wait on statistical data and results from a few neighboring states that recently legalized sports betting. The state will revisit the idea upon receipt of those figures to make an informed decision based on whether it has a positive economic impact.
