Starship Troopers Actor Speaks Out on Possibility of Reboot
Casper Van Dien, known for his role as Johnny Rico in Starship Troopers, shared his thoughts on the possibility of a franchise reboot. In an interview with Inverse from 2021, Van Dien stated, “I wouldn’t say ‘no’ to a revival in the style of The Mandalorian.”
He further elaborated on his vision for a reboot, suggesting it “would fit so well in today’s climate.” Van Dien expressed interest in seeing directors like Quentin Tarantino, Edgar Wright, James Wan, and Robert Rodriguez take the helm for potential episodes or story arcs.
Reflecting on a discussion at the Scream Awards, he said, “I think that all those directors, it would be fun, to have them come in and do an episode or two or three, or an arc, or something like that. That would be fun if we had that kind of thing where its real filmmakers making the thing. That would be my goal.”
Van Dien also expressed a desire to return as an older Johnny Rico, saying, “I think it would be nice to have Old Man Rico back. I think it would be fun to have some young blood in there but still have one old crotchety old man in there like me.”
What Would a Starship Troopers Reboot Look Like?
A reboot could take several exciting forms. One idea is a remake with modern special effects while preserving the original’s satire and critical tone. Alternatively, a prequel focusing on the backstory of Jean Rasczak, played by Michael Ironside, could explore the universe’s origins and themes of militarism and imperialism. These approaches offer fresh perspectives while honoring the franchise’s essence.
